Chris Sutton laughs off audacious Rangers CL claim made by fan

A football supporter left Chris Sutton bemused after he called BBC 606 to predict Rangers would win the Champions League next season.

The fan also claimed Ryan Mason would go on to be Tottenham’s best ever manager.

It is fair to say Sutton and co-host Robbie Savage could not take him seriously, with the former laughing at the audacious claims made.

Sutton replied to the fan saying, “Wow. That air in Wales is amazing.

“If Ryan Mason is the best Spurs manager of all time and Steven Gerrard wins the Champions League with Rangers I will eat numerous hats.

“I will run around Norwich naked. It’s just not going to happen.”

Champions League hopes

We have to side with Sutton on this one as we have very little hope of actually winning the Champions League next term.

However, Gers will not simply be there to make up the numbers, and we think Gerrard will make us competitive against any team we come up against.

We face a big task to qualify from the group as we unlikely to be in the top seeds, so will likely play two teams who, on paper, may be better than us.

In the Europa League we showed our competitive edge and have picked up good results this year and last.

The squad must take encouragement from that, and if Gerrard can frustrate the top teams with his tactics then we may just surprise a few, including Sutton.

Good recruitment could go a long way to helping our chances in Europe next season, as will keeping game-changers like Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent.
