Alex McLeish: Jack Simpson has big chance after Rangers injury news
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish believes that Rangers defender Jack Simpson has a massive chance at Ibrox after recent injury problems.
The winter signing has been thrown into the deep end after injuries to the likes of Filip Helander and Leon Balogun in recent weeks.
McLeish insisted that Simpson still needs to do more than prove himself after arriving from Bournemouth, after numerous starts for the Bears.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Now the recruitment comes to fruition and he gets his chance.
“We know he started the Celtic game with a couple of good headers, a couple of good passes and then there was a couple of little mistakes. We felt he needs to be 100%.
“He’ll be aware of the quick learning routine when you play for Rangers. These games will really help him to achieve the level that the scouts have seen in him.
“That is still to be shown by him, and for us, to see he is every bit a player that the recruitment people say he was.”
After numerous opportunities, Simpson finally got his clean-sheet after a gritty display in the 3-0 win at Livingston last night.
The defender gave away the penalty that cost us a win at St Johnstone, and then made the mistake that handed Celtic their goal in the last Old Firm.
Depsite Livi coming close from distance numerous times, they rarely caused the likes of Simpson and Conor Goldson problems ahead of Jon McLaughlin.
This is brilliant progress, and with another start against Aberdeen all-but-confirmed, Simpson will be looking to catch the eye once again.
