Carlton Palmer is convinced Ryan Kent will leave Rangers for Premier League club

Carlton Palmer is adamant it wouldn’t take much convincing for Premier League clubs to prise Ryan Kent from Rangers clutches this summer.

Kent, 24, has enjoyed a brilliant season for the Light Blues, directly contributing to 17 goals in 35 Scottish Premiership games en route to a historic 55th title, while he has also shone in the Europa League as the club progressed to the last 16 stage.

But that form has prompted renewed interest in the winger according to the Scottish Sun, who claimed in April that Leeds United were lining up a £15million bid for the player Jermain Defoe called “unbelievable” on RangersTV in March, after their unsuccessful pursuit last summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, ex-Leeds midfielder Palmer believes Rangers will find it difficult to hold onto their prized asset if a club from England comes calling.

“Listen, Champions League or no Champions League, the place to play is in the Premier League,” he said.

“If he got the opportunity to go and play in the Premier League, I’m sure he’ll go and play in the Premier League.

“He’s got maybe an opportunity to play in the Premier League. For me, as a manager, as a player, the place to be now or the place to play is in the English Premier League.”

English oversight

Here we go again – ‘the Premier League is the be-all and end-all’ – that’s the line we get from most pundits south of the border.

Palmer’s just the latest figure to spout this boring nonsense.

Of course Kent is likely to want to test himself back in England and the Premier League, but he won’t be willing to give up his Champions League dream for Rangers just for any club.

It’s not the case of being desperate to move there, it’s about the size and ambition of the club he’s going to.

Kent won’t want to join a side struggling at the foot of the division.

You can rule out any bottom-half side, while he would have to weigh up his options if they came from higher up.

Leeds? Maybe, but they are unlikely to be in Europe next season and we think Kent would like a shot at the Champions League before he exits Ibrox.
