Ally McCoist blasted Callum McGregor for his “crazy” red card in the first half of Rangers’ clash against Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday.
Referee Nick Walsh showed McGregor a second yellow card after a lunge at Glen Kamara in the build-up to Kemar Roofe’s goal.
It was a superb piece of officiating as Walsh allowed play to continue after McGregor’s wild tackle on Kamara and once the goal went into, he returned to show a second yellow to the Celtic player.
McCoist was full of praise for Walsh but was highly critical of McGregor.
“First thing you’ve got to say, tremendous refereeing to allow it to continue,” said McCoist on Sky Sports Main Event in the first half on Sunday.
“We’re very quick to criticise when they make mistakes, great refereeing in allowing the game to flow and go on.
“But at the same time, he’s on a yellow card. Why go to ground?
“Why do you go to ground and give yourself an opportunity to pick up another yellow card?
Scottish referees get a lot of stick but in this case, Walsh’s refereeing was superb.
Not only did he allow play to continue which led to a goal but he also went back and booked the player, which is something that referees sometimes fail to do.
There was no denying it was a second yellow card for McGregor, who completely wiped Kamara out and made no attempt to win the ball at all.
You wouldn’t have expected that kind of mindless decision-making by him but it benefits us as we’ve gone in at the break ahead in the final Old Firm derby of the season.
Rangers haven’t been at their flying best but they’ve still managed to score two very well-taken goals via Roofe’s chest and an Alfredo Morelos stunner.
Let’s hope the lads can pile the misery on the 10 men of Celtic in the second half and really show them why we’re the best team in Scotland.
