Rangers’ pursuit of Heerenveen midfielder Joey Veerman looks set to hit a dead end, based on a report by Voetbal International.
The Dutch news website claims the Gers are one of a number of teams who are interested in signing the 22-year-old in the summer transfer window.
Stade Reims and Atalanta, as well as the Light Blues, are said to be following Veerman closely while Southampton and Club Brugge have also been linked.
However, all of those clubs could be set for disappointment as VI reports Veerman would rather continue his career at a top club in the Netherlands.
Feyenoord were priced out of a move for the playmaker last year and it is understood Heerenveen want a “nice transfer fee” for their star man this summer.
Onto the next one
Rangers will have plenty of players on their shortlist ahead of the transfer window reopening in the coming weeks and the speculation linking the Gers with Veerman is only going to be the tip of the iceberg.
It would have been nice to see the Dutch playmaker head to Ibrox in the summer because he’s someone who’s excelled in the midfield in the Eredivisie this season.
According to stats by Wyscout, only one player in the Dutch top-flight has made more passes into the final third than Veerman while he also ranks fifth for smart passes and 12th for key passes .
Rangers aren’t desperate for a player of his mould with Steven Gerrard’s midfield dominating the Premiership this season.
However, there’s no denying that a young Dutchman like Veerman could be someone with resale value going forward.
Let’s see what happens over the summer because if one of the top teams in Holland don’t try to sign Veerman, he may be tempted to swap Heerenveen for Glasgow.
In other Rangers news, this European club chief is obsessed with signing one of Gerrard’s stars.
