Michael O’Neill raves about Steven Davis and suggests he’s better than George Best

Former Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill is a huge fan of Steven Davis and suggests any manager would love to work with the Rangers star.

Davis is set to equal Peter Shilton’s 125-cap record this week – tying him for joint-first in the UK rankings.

O’Neill managed Davis at Northern Ireland and was amazed with his professionalism and character off the pitch.

When asked who he thought was Norther Ireland’s best-ever player, O’Neill replied per The Scottish Sun, “I would honestly pick Steven Davis. He would be easier to manage than George for a start.

“Steven is incredible. One thing you need as a manager is players you can trust and rely on and I never doubted I had that with him.

“When I look down the years of Northern Ireland players, everyone loves George Best and rightly so. But when you look at Steven’s career, there has never been a better player that has played for Northern Ireland.

“He is a brilliant player. Every manager that has handled him will say what I would. He is a top professional, a top player, a top lad to have around you.”

Never a bad word against him

There is not a single player, manager or pundit who has something negative to say about Davis.

He has had a long career too and that shows he is not only a great player but a great person too.

We are proud to have him in our ranks and the news of his new contract at the weekend was amongst the best news we have heard all year.

He is well-deserving of reaching 125 caps, which should happen against Italy on Thursday, and there is no doubt he has given more for his country than 37-cap Best.

Davis has set the standard for club and country for several years now and his level of professionalism means he could actually have a few more years left in the tank.

To continue playing at such a high level well into his 30s shows how committed Davis is – there are few other players who can match his professionalism on and off the pitch.

Best certainly came a long way short.
