Chris Sutton reacts instantly as Rangers draw 1-1 v Celtic
Chris Sutton has slammed Celtic for their failure to defend set-pieces in his instant reaction to Rangers drawing 1-1 at Parkhead on Sunday.
While the Gers’ bid to win all of their Old Firm meetings this season was halted by John Kennedy’s men, Steven Gerrard’s side were able to keep their target of going the league campaign unbeaten with a draw.
Alfredo Morelos netted his first Old Firm goal to secure the point in Glasgow’s East End, cancelling out an earlier goal for the home side by Mohamed Elynoussi.
Sutton took to his Twitter account straight after the full-time whistle to bemoan his former club’s ability to cope with corners.
He said: “At least Celtic stopped a clean sweep. What did we learn? Celtic knocked it around ok but weren’t clinical enough and still can’t defend set pieces…”
No win – but a good day
With the Premiership title wrapped up already, we didn’t have to beat Celtic on Sunday.
Of course we wanted to beat the Bhoys – we always do. But to preserve the unbeaten record and see Morelos get his first Old Firm goal was more than good enough for us.
Rangers weren’t at their best.
There were a few moments where we thought we could have won the game but overall, Celtic had more of those moments.
They’ll be way more annoyed about this result than us.
And at the end of the day, that’s good enough for us.
Sutton’s right about Celtic’s inability to defend set-pieces because Morelos was completely unmarked at the back post when he headed into the goal.
But Rangers’ frailty was also exposed at Parkhead – the right-back position.
With captain James Tavernier injured and Nathan Patterson not fit enough to start, centre-back Leon Balogun started on the right-hand side and you could tell he wasn’t comfortable.
Celtic targetted the Nigeria international, who had a tough afternoon.
Luckily, he wasn’t on a losing side come full-time.
