Allan McGregor should play for Scotland at the Euros - Ally McCoist

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has labelled Allan McGregor the best goalkeeper in Scotland and claimed he should represent his country at the Euros.

McGregor has kept 20 clean sheets this season in 32 appearances for his club. He’s played a huge role in the Gers winning title number 55 and going so far undefeated in the Premiership and Europa League.

The big man announced his retirement from international football in March 2019. Overall, he’s played 42 times for Scotland between 2007 and 2018.

Speaking on talkSPORT [7.10 am], McCoist suggested that it may be time to recall him for this summers tournament. He said: “Allan McGregor has had an unbelievable season.

“His save against Slavia Prague last week – it’s one of the best saves I’ve ever seen. Ever seen.

“He’s 39. They’re talking about giving him another contract. 100% he deserves it. He’s the best goalkeeper in the country.

“There’s an argument that he’s the best goalkeeper in Scotland, so he should be playing at the Euros.”

The best in Scotland?

Steve Clarke announced his squad earlier this week, they’re due to face Austria, Israel and the Faroe Islands before the end of March.

Called up to national duty were David Marshall (Hull City), Jon McLaughlin (Rangers) and Craig Gordon (Hearts). The argument could definitely then be made that McGregor is the best keeper in Scotland.

On current form, the 38-year-old is keeping McLaughlin out of the Rangers side, and Gordon is playing in the second tier. Marshall is playing in the third tier of English football.

McLaughlin in particular was a surprise inclusion. He’s played just 11 times in all competitions for Rangers this season as McGregor continues to shine. He hasn’t played a single minute of football for the Gers in 2021 either.

McGregor has given no indication that he’d come out of retirement for Scotland anyway. His last appearance came in 2018 against Israel in a UEFA Nations League game. If he were to change his mind, it would definitely be supported by the Rangers fans. He’s definitely the best in the country.
