Ben Wild Fan Q&A: James Tavernier is ‘Hands down’ Rangers Player of the Season
Every week we’ll be asking Rangers fans on our Facebook account for questions that will be answered by Ibrox News editor Ben Wild. You can join in by following the Rangers Insider Facebook account and watching out for weekly mailbag posts.
Picking out a Player of the Season from this rip-roaring Rangers side could be a tough task but it looks like fans are starting to mount cases for their star man.
The Light Blues have enjoyed a sensational season so far with the Premiership title now secured while there is still the small matter of a Europa League campaign to resume on Thursday.
Steven Gerrard’s side could end up playing a further 13 matches during the current campaign but after already racking up 45 games it is not too early to debate who could be in the reckoning for the top Gers gong.
We wanted to know what was on your mind and asked you to submit questions for our new weekly mailbag for Ibrox News editor Ben Wild to answer.
This was one of the questions from a Gers fan who used a special nickname for our goalkeeper, you all know who we’re talking about…
…
OK, I’ll try and change your mind. Allan McGregor has been fantastic this season. After Jon McLaughlin was signed in the summer it looked as if the veteran’s time at the club was coming to an end. He proved us all wrong though didn’t he? After proving himself in the Europa League qualifiers he was given the nod in the Premiership and no one has heard from McLaughlin since.
He is a worthy candidate for player of the season but I can’t look further than James Tavernier. He may be an obvious choice but how can you ignore the stats? 17 goals and 15 assists in 41 appearances this season. Those would be incredible stats for a centre forward nevermind a right-back. Yes, plenty of them were penalties but he still scored them. He is the captain who led us to 55 and his goals have won us a fair chunk of games this campaign.
For me the player of the season is Tavernier hands down but I’d like to give an honourable mention to Connor Goldson for his outstanding defending and the extraordinary record of starting every game in all competitions for us so far.
Let’s be honest, all of our regular players are in with a shout of being player of the season because we’ve just been that good this year. McGregor has had a great career which may be coming to an end and if sentiment takes over, I have no problem with him winning player of the year.
