Nicola Sturgeon: Rangers v Celtic at risk unless assurances are met
Nicola Sturgeon has fired a warning ahead of the upcoming Old Firm clash in light of the celebrations by Rangers fans after No.55 was confirmed.
The First Minister of Scotland has, alongside a host of other senior government officials, taken aim at Gers fans after a number lined the streets of Ibrox and further afield to celebrate the clinching of the Premiership title on Sunday.
As reported on the Daily Record website, Sturgeon responded to a question in Parliament questioning the validity of allowing football matches to be played.
“In terms of future fixtures, I said in my opening remarks, there’s a variety of discussions happening over course this week, including one between myself and the chief constable today,” Sturgeon said.
“We will report back on those in due course, certainly before the scheduled Old Firm match on the March 21.”
She added: “A minority can’t be allowed to act irresponsibly.
“I hope we don’t have to spoil that for the majority but we will have to assure ourselves that there will be no repeat of the scenes that we saw at the weekend.
“That, frankly, is still very much work in progress.”
Optimism ahead after easing of restrictions
With the Old Firm clash less than two weeks ago there is serious concern that this fixture could be at risk, but we’re champions and that is one thing Sturgeon cannot take away from us.
Things should get easier, though, with the easing of restrictions announced by Sturgeon in Parliament.
From March 12 up to four adults from two different households will be able to meet outside while those aged between 12-17 can meet in groups of up to four households [The Scotsman].
This should go some way to ensuring the scenes from the weekend are not repeated.
There was obviously a lot of outpouring of emotion upon securing our 55th title after waiting so long.
With all of the restrictions enforced over the past year it was too much for some and while they should be lamented for their actions they should not be castigated to the high hills, especially the ones who were observing things like wearing face masks.
The forthcoming easing of restrictions will allow for more controlled gatherings and that should help proceedings.
