Dave King: Steven Gerrard is going nowhere after Rangers title 55
Former Rangers chairman Dave King has dismissed talks of Steven Gerrard going back to manage Liverpool this summer.
The Englishman led Rangers to their 55th Scottish League title, stopping arch-rivals Celtic from winning their 10th in-a-row.
So far, Rangers are undefeated in the Premiership and Europa League this season. It’s been a near-perfect campaign for the blue side of Glasgow.
King, the man who appointed Gerrard in 2018, expects the boss to stay with the club as there is still work to be done. Speaking to Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, he said: “I think there’s a zero per cent chance of Steven going to Liverpool in the near future.
“Steven is not the type of man to break his contract. Steven extended his contract with Rangers full in the knowledge that it would require winning a title and then defending a title.
“Getting into the Champions League was another obvious target. I don’t think Steven will be satisfied with just winning the league title and I know he wants to get into the Champions League.
“He loves the club, the supporters love him and he has the full support and backing of the board. He has a big task ahead of him, defending the league title will be important.”
The job has just begun
So much has been achieved by Gerrard in such a short amount of time. As King rightly says, there is still much to be done. In reality, the job has just started.
A genuine question, why would he want to go back to Liverpool now? It appears to be a thankless task. Jurgen Klopp’s management skills are being questions, despite delivering a 6th Champions League and their first-ever Premier League title. Football is a strange game.
Gerrard has already cemented his legacy at Ibrox, but surely he doesn’t want to stop there. Throughout his career, the Englishman kept immaculate standards and continued to perform at the highest level.
The celebrations could get better, still. Rangers travel to Celtic Park to face the Hoops in two weeks and could be treated to a guard of honour. That would really rub salt in the wounds.
In other Rangers news, Glasgow City Council have taken aim at Rangers fans in the fall-out of their title-winning celebrations.
