Allan McGregor and Steven Davis are Rangers stalwarts and both have played massive roles in securing title No.55 – and they must be kept at the club.
That is according to former Gers striker Kris Boyd who is adamant that the duo must be handed new deals and given the chance to lead Steven Gerrard’s side into the Champions League.
Both players see their current contracts expire on May 31 [Transfermarkt] but speaking on Sky Sports’ The Football Show [10am, 08/03/21] Boyd is insistent that this should not be the end of their Ibrox stays, despite their advancing years [McGregor is 39, Davis is 36].
He said: “There’s some players in there who are out of contact, Allan McGregor and Steven Davis, it’s important the club get them tied down because they’ve been crucial to everything Rangers have done this season, along with a few others.
“It’s very, very important that you don’t stand still and it comes back to one thing – the recruitment in the summer is massive to take Rangers on and consolidate that level of performance, or up it and go again next season.”
Legends have still got it
McGregor and Davis are both in their second spell at Rangers after spending the majority of the middle parts of their careers down south in England.
The Gers stopper returned in 2018 and has been impenetrable at times.
He has conceded just seven times in 23 Premiership appearances [Wyscout] during the current campaign and he has produced some mightily impressive displays, particularly v Celtic in the Old Firm on January 2.
Davis, meanwhile, has added grit and solidity to the Gers midfield since rejoining in 2019 from Southampton.
He has featured in 29 of 32 league matches so far and only Ryan Jack [94.69] makes more passes per 90 than Davis [85.57] in the whole of the Premiership this season, per Wyscout.
But equally as important as their playing abilities is their leadership roles.
They both have that winning mentality that Gerrard has worked so hard to instill in this Gers side and they possess a maturity that rubs off on others.
We think it is absolutely vital that the pair are offered new deals to keep them at Ibrox next season.
