It is an emotional time for everyone connected to Rangers after ending a long title drought but it takes on an even different meaning for Ally McCoist.
As the club’s all-time record goalscorer the Gers legend is revered around Ibrox quarters for the contributions he made during his playing days, but his spell as manager was less successful.
Under his stewardship the Light Blues were placed into administration and forced down into the Scottish Division.
McCoist won consecutive titles but stepped down in December 2014 and the Gers continued their ascent back to the Premiership.
After Steven Gerrard and co wrapped up the club’s 55th title on Sunday and put an end to a 10-year wait for the top honour, Gers legends were quick to pay their tributes, and McCoist did not hold back on talkSPORT Breakfast with Laura Woods [6am, 08/03/21].
He said: “Brilliant, I’m buzzing. Yes [it’s emotional], it’s everything. I’m just ecstatic for everybody, clearly you saw how much at the weekend it meant to so many people.
“Without getting carried away it was unbridled joy everywhere and everybody’s been absolutely buzzing.
“What a job they’ve done this year, and it’s not finished yet.
“I was very hopeful at the start of the season but the way they’ve gone about their business has been beyond my wildest dreams, tremendous.”
Buzzing for Ally
McCoist is one of the most affable figures in football and there is no one we are more delighted for than him.
After an illustrious playing career at Ibrox he had the tenacity to take the top reigns and tackle the unenviable task of succeeding the legendary Walter Smith as manager.
No one could have foreseen the troubles that would ensue and McCoist was forced to work under horrendous conditions at the club.
We had to start from the bottom and McCoist was prepared to roll his sleeves up and begin our ascent back up the divisions.
While things did not go to plan later down the line we cannot forget the work he started and the sacrifices he was prepared to make.
This is a title for all Gers worldwide but we wanted to pay a special tribute to a legend.
Thanks for everything Ally, your contribution laid the foundations for this historic victory.
