Rangers sports scientist Thomas Carpels has admitted he will not mind if Antwerp win on Thursday.
He is a self-confessed fan of the Belgian club and admits he has been teased by Gers players and staff ahead of the tie.
Carpels was very open in an interview with The Scottish Sun, saying, “Let me put it this way, if Antwerp eliminates Rangers, I won’t cry.
“My colleagues and all the players know that Antwerp is the team close to my heart. They’ve all teased me about it.
“But they know why I support them and know I am not a glory-hunter because I have been going to the Bosuilstadion since when I was a kid.
“In Glasgow, they have respect for Antwerp. Their victory against Tottenham has also made an impression here.
“But there is no fear. They have confidence. The Scottish title is more important.”
Maybe too honest?
It is quite refreshing to hear a staff member speak so honestly but it rings some alarm bells, too.
It may sound a little trivial that a sports scientist does not care whether we win or lose, but it is important everyone is pulling in the same direction.
If we lose on Thursday it would be a very disappointing result – we cannot have one staff member with a big smile on his face on Friday.
Steven Gerrard and the boys will rightly be frustrated by a defeat and will aim to bounce back immediately against Dundee United at the weekend.
Part of our success this year has been down to our winning mentality.
Each time we have dropped points we have responded with a win, but these are the crunch games now.
It would be wonderful to enjoy a European journey and re-establish ourselves as a powerhouse on the continent.
As such, the thought of losing to Royal Antwerp should not be entering into anybody’s minds – players or staff. Carpels should probably keep his views – fair as they – to himself.
