Simon Jordan claims that the Rangers ‘five’ are set to be shocked by the scale of the punishment meted out by the club.
Steven Gerrard confirmed today in his press conference that a Covid breach had taken place and named the five players involved.
He said, “Bongani Zungu is involved. Nathan Patterson, Calvin Bassey and Dapo [Mebude], who is obviously a part of the Academy and on-loan at Queen of the South at the moment, and a young goalkeeper who is an Academy player but has spent some time around the first-team as well, Brian Kinnear.
“We will certainly move forward from it. We are at a real, critical stage in terms of the games coming up and where we are as a club.”
Gerrard said he felt personally let down and that he would sit down with all the players once they’d isolated.
However, talking on the White & Jordan show on talkSPORT (Wednesday, 12.30pm), Jordan thinks they can expect to be “royally smacked”.
“As far as govt jurisdiction is concerned they’ve got their fixed penalty,” Jordan said. “The notion that she [Nicola Sturgeon] will do anything other than that is for the birds.
“Rangers will deal with it. They’ve been laughing from behind their hands at the car crash that is Celtic and they would have wanted to win the title without any issues in their back garden
“They’ve got five players who have decided not to follow the rules.
“I think they’ll get royally smacked by Rangers and I think it will be a far bigger smacking than they might be imagining.
“Nicola Sturgeon will expect Rangers to deal with these individuals properly and there will be a public dressing down.”
Asked if the Premiership was at risk Jordan said, “No. How are you going to justify that to Aberdeen or Livingston? The power the government has, it’s so enraged by the way football has been acting… That means Gers will deal with this more stridently.”
Harsh punishment incoming
This is disappointing but perhaps inevitable. The Athletic is a very solid source of information and had already named Nathan Patterson and Calvin Bassey.
Rangers fans hoped it might turn out to be exaggerated but it got even worse, with five players confirmed, as reported by the Follow, Follow forum on Tuesday.
The big new name is Bongani Zungu and that’s a real disappointment.
The 28-year-old is only on loan and has only been at the club since October. He is old enough to know better.
We can see Rangers terminating his loan deal and dishing out hefty punishments to the others.
They’re all likely to miss out on the best season at Ibrox for a long time, and for them, the title win will be tarnished by their own stupidity.
We think Simon Jordan has it all spot on. There won’t be any more punishment from the government and the future of the Premiership isn’t at risk.
However, it could easily have been so much worse and for that reason, it’s going to be very hard to forgive the five players.
In other Rangers news, Dave King feared Celtic would win 30-in-a-row in Gers dark days.
