‘Magic’ – Exclusive: Alex McLeish claims Gerrard facing ‘Great headache’ at Ibrox
We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…
Alex McLeish has claimed that Rangers finally have their first-choice midfield available to them in the Scottish Premiership.
Ryan Jack returned against Hibernian to partner Steven Davis and Glen Kamara, with Scott Arfield the only option currently out injured.
McLeish claimed they are “great options” and that the likes of Joe Aribo and Ianis Hagi offer Steven Gerrard real headaches at Ibrox.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “I think they’re all great options.
“He’s still got one or two that can come in and do a decent job, but you’d think that they are most experienced trio.
“You’ve got the likes of Aribo that can produce the kind of magic, you can forgive these guys for sometimes having to learn some defensive situations, but by and large this is a really good midfield.
“We’ve still got a few players that have a couple of knocks that can come back like Arfield. It’s a great headache when you’re winning.”
It is vital in tough games such as the one against Hibernian that you have the experience of the likes of Jack available, but we may see a different side against St Johnstone this evening.
Gerrard won’t be expecting as much defensive work as he did at Easter Road, which may see the likes of Hagi return in that midfield trio.
Aribo was pushed further forward against Hibs, and that rotation will be key to give everybody options while Alfredo Morelos is out.
It will be interesting to see the selection against St Johnstone, with the midfield trio surely expecting to busy offensively rather than on the back foot.
