Exclusive: McLeish reacts to major Tuesday announcement, makes Chelsea comparison

We’re delighted to welcome former Rangers manager Alex McLeish as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Ibrox…

Alex McLeish has reacted to the signing of Nnamdi Ofoborh by praising the Rangers recruitment team for their work in January.

The Bears announced the signing of the young midfielder on Tuesday, who will arrive at Ibrox in the summer after a pre-contract deal was agreed.

McLeish compared the successes of Rangers to the failures of Chelsea in the Premier League, who sacked Frank Lampard after spending over £200million.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, McLeish said, “Absolutely. You see Chelsea that sacked Frank Lampard and recruitment wise hasn’t been magnificent there at the moment.

“We’ll see if these guys come good in the end. If you don’t quite have the money to spend then you’ve got to go out and scout.

“That’s what the recruitment guys will be hoping that these guys are going to come to the fore, the recruitment guys are so, so important. Obviously Steve and Gary will have to get a glimpse of these guys before they come in.”

Ofoborh was the third signing of this window.

The Bears worked hard to bring Jack Simpson and Scott Wright permanently and got those deals over the line, but for Ofoborh, he will spend the rest of the campaign on loan at Wycombe in the Championship.

The 21-year-old has only completed three minutes of senior league action for Bournemouth before his Ibrox move was announced, and Steven Gerrard will clearly want him to get more experience before moving to Glasgow.

With Bongani Zungu not exactly performing well, he will likely leave Ibrox in the summer, opening the space for the younger, and hopefully hungrier Ofoborh to prove himself.
