Rangers 22y/o set for move to the States after 13 years at the club – report
Rarely-seen Rangers star Jamie Barjonas is close to ending his Ibrox misery by signing for Orange County in the United Soccer League, according to the Daily Record.
It will bring a conclusion to the Gers youth academy product’s 13-year spell in Glasgow after he joined the club as a nine-year-old.
There were high hopes for him when he burst onto the scene and made his Rangers debut as an 18-year-old in May 2017 but things have not progressed as expected since then.
The Daily Record report that he is set to agree a one-year deal with an option to extend this at Orange County who play in the United Soccer League championship in North America.
Rangers have close links with Orange County and have previously sent them the likes of Matthew Shields and Cameron Palmer to gain experience but Barjonas will be leaving for good.
He has not featured for the Light Blues this season and was last named in the squad for the final Europa League group game against Lech Poznan on December 10.
Trimming of the squad
It has been a window of shipping out deadwood rather than bringing in star names for Steven Gerrard.
Rangers have agreed pre-contracts with Jack Simpson and Scott Wright but they are not set to join until the summer barring any late moves to bring them in on deadline day.
The likes of Glenn Middleton and Kai Kennedy have been sent out on domestic loans to continue their development but this will be the first permanent departure from the Gers squad.
It is not one that will have any effect on the side given Barjonas’ lack of first-team chances this season.
He will leave the club having made nine Scottish Premiership appearances between 2017-18.
Barjonas spent the 2018-19 campaign on loan at Bury in the EFL and Raith Rovers in League One while he featured for Partick Thistle in the Championship last season but he has failed to prove to Gerrard that he is worthy of a place in the Rangers first-team.
He will now head Stateside in the search for regular football.
