talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist has said that Celtic can’t afford to lose the huge Old Firm clash against Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday.
However, he said that the Rangers defensive record is “absolutely frightening” and highlighted the 17 clean sheets Gers have kept in 21 league games.
Talking on the Breakfast show (talkSPORT, Friday, 9.30am) McCoist said, “A lot has been made of the fact that Rangers are 16 points clear and rightly so.
“But Celtic have three games in hand and Steven Gerrard and the boys will be treating it as if they’ve won those.
“That said, Rangers, particularly defensively this season in the league have been absolutely remarkable. I think it’s 17 clean sheets in 21 games, something like that, that’s absolutely frightening.
“Everyone is excited about the game, none more than me. Celtic have turned it a little but it’s a big, big game because Celtic can’t afford to be defeated I don’t think.
Win would almost take Gers to title
Celtic have already got a huge mountain to climb in the Premiership. With 17 clean sheets in 21 games and an unbeaten league record, Rangers don’t look like dropping the points Celtic need them to.
If the gap at the top moves to 19 points, even if Celtic win their three games in hand you’d have to think that 10 points is too big a gap for Rangers to be caught.
It would certainly take a collapse of unprecedented proportions.
Another clean sheet on Saturday will take Rangers to the brink of their first silverware under Gerrard.
It is a huge game, though, and you have to assume that Celtic will be better than they were in the last Old Firm game.
If they don’t up their game from that sorry show then Gers will win at Ibrox at a canter.
