‘Delightful’ – Sky Sports pundit hails ‘Top class’ Rangers ace with only 2 starts in 20/21
Andy Walker has backed Rangers forward Jermain Defoe to come up with numerous important goals this season as the Bears charge towards the title.
The Sky Sports pundit has claimed that the 38-year-old’s goalscoring record despite being rarely-used is a sign of a “top-class” striker.
Defoe found the net in the 4-0 win at Ross County last weekend, despite only being brought on for the final 19 minutes in Dingwall.
Walker has backed Defoe to reach double figures this season and believes he will have a massive impact on the title race between now and the end of the campaign.
“For him to be so fit, so sharp, his touches are delightful, he still knows where the goal is,” he said on the Scottish Football Podcast.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes up with not only a decent number of goals, maybe a dozen or so, I bet there’ll be one weekend where he gets a really important one. I think that’s the mark of a top-class player.”
Steven Gerrard has already explained that Defoe is on a different training regime to the rest of the squad and it is clearly working.
With the veteran not included in the Europa League squad, he has had another week full of rest and could be ready to be unleashed against Dundee United.
Defoe has only made two starts this season, with four appearances off the bench – scoring twice and delivered an assist, averaging a goal every 75 minutes.
Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe are the first-choice strikers, but whenever a goal is needed, you can definitely trust Defoe to come off the bench and find the back of the net.
We wouldn’t be surprised to see the veteran on the scoresheet against Dundee United, it’s just what he does with ease.
