Journalist: Rangers charged by UEFA after Europa League incident v Benfica

Rangers have been fined €10,000 by UEFA after the kick-off of the Gers’ Europa League game against Benfica was delayed.

The game at Ibrox kicked off a few minutes late and UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body have decided to fine the Light Blues.

According to Athletic Journalist Jordan Campbell, UEFA have closed their investigation into whether Gers boss Steven Gerrard was responsible for the delay.

Campbell tweeted, “Rangers have been fined €10,000 by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body for the late kick-off v Benfica at Ibrox.”

He went on to say that UEFA have closed “the disciplinary proceedings opened against Steven Gerrard for being responsible.”

The fine has to be paid within 90 days as many Gers fans must be wondering why their club has been slapped with a fine.

Rangers

The Gers have been fined for breaking article 11 of UEFA’s disciplinary regulations which states that anyone who “culpably reports late – or not at all – for a match, or is responsible for a late kick-off” has violated their general principle of conduct.

This means that UEFA believes that Rangers were at fault for the late kick-off but it remains to be seen why this was the case.

They must’ve thought that Gerrard had something to do with it if they opened an investigation into him.

The Gers didn’t see any advantage from the delayed kick-off as they once against threw away a two-goal lead against Benfica and ended up drawing a game they should’ve won.

The fine won’t be a huge issue for the Gers and we are certain that they will make sure all of their future European ties kick off at the correct time.
