‘Top class’ – Kris Boyd blown away by ‘Excellent’ Rangers ace with only 7 apps in 20/21
Kris Boyd has heaped praise on Rangers forward Jermain Defoe for the impact he has made at Ibrox this season.
The veteran striker has gone somewhat under-the-radar with the Bears still unbeaten in all competitions, despite him playing a big role in that.
Defoe missed out on the Europa League victory against Standard Liege last night, with Steven Gerrard not naming him in his squad for that competition.
Boyd has been delighted with Defoe and pointed out his attitude to find the back of the net against Falkirk in the League Cup highlighted his important role.
“Rangers are in a right good place right now, with goals coming from all over the pitch,” he said on Sky Sports’ Scottish Football podcast.
“Jermain Defoe’s finish on Sunday night was excellent, and he’s a top-class striker who knows where the goal is.”
Gerrard has numerous options available in the final third, and when you compare that to Celtic, it is one of the reasons behind our contrasting starts.
Neil Lennon was doomed when Odsonne Edouard was ruled out, and that is a problem Rangers don’t have with Cedric Itten, Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe all options.
Defoe knows his role is being a rotation option, but that hasn’t stopped him from performing every single time he has been called upon.
The 38-year-old has scored three times this season in his 341 minutes of action in all competitions, a better average than Morelos.
His goal against Livingston was his 300th in his career, and it was full of the class that everybody remembers him for.
Defoe will be needed between now and the end of the season, and if he can continue to find the back of the net, he could play a massive part in bringing the title back to Ibrox.
