Reliable journalist details key update on potential Jack Wilshere transfer to Rangers

Rangers are yet to get in touch with midfielder Jack Wilshere about a potential free transfer to Ibrox, according to PA Sport journalist Andy Newport.

Writing via his personal Twitter account on Saturday, Newport reported that while contact has not been made at the moment, 28-year-old Wilshere would be “willing to consider” a move to Glasgow.

Wilshere was released by West Ham on Monday and speculation has since been rife about him potentially heading to Rangers.

Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reported that the Light Blues had been at an advanced stage of discussions with the former Arsenal playmaker but that no longer seems to be the case based on this update by Newport.

PA Sport adds, via FourFourTwo, that Wilshere is eager to hear what Steven Gerrard has to say about a potential deal in Glasgow.

A source close to Wilshere said: “Rangers would be an option for Jack if there had been any contact. So far, however, there hasn’t been any.

“Jack thinks Rangers are a great club. They tried to take him on loan when Walter Smith was in charge back in 2010 just as he was starting out at Arsenal but he ended up going to Bolton.”

Wilshere’s injury issues are well-documented but there’s no denying that when he is fit, able to play and able to play to the best of his abilities, he can be a real asset for a team like Rangers.

Despite signing Bongani Zungu on deadline day from Amiens, the Gers could still do with a bit of extra strength in depth in their midfield and Wilshere offers something a lot more different than Zungu due to his ability to get forward and get really stuck in with the attacking phases of play.

Former Celtic manager John Barnes told Bonuscodebets that Wilshere could be the player to help stop the Hoops from winning their 10th Scottish Premiership title in a row.

“I believe Wilshere would be a great signing for Rangers – it really could be the perfect club for him,” said Barnes.

“He’s had a number of injuries throughout his career, but at Rangers he’d have an understanding manager in Steven – someone he knows personally, who’d allow him to stay fit and, most importantly, to play.

“Jack would bring a lot to the table – he’s creative in his play and he’s hungry. He really wants to get back out there and has a lot to give. Perhaps someone like Wilshere could help Rangers prevent Celtic from getting their 10-in-a-row.”
