‘Massively important’ – Rangers Exclusive: Bruce claims 19/20 momentum has helped Balogun shine

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Alex Bruce has claimed that Leon Balogun’s recent run of games with Wigan Athletic can “only be a good thing” for Rangers as they go into the new league season.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that the Nigeria international will be “confident” after helping the Latics to post a series of impressive results during the Championship restart in England.

The 32-year-old joined the Gers on a free transfer last month, and has hit the ground running at Ibrox.

The centre-back has started both of Rangers’ opening Scottish Premiership matches, including the 3-0 win over St. Mirren on Sunday, and has helped his new side to keep consecutive clean sheets.

And Bruce believes that the momentum he is carrying from last season has helped him to make a seamless transition.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “It’s massively important.

“Wigan were doing very well up until all the drama surrounding their administration.

“They picked up a lot of decent results and Balogun really helped them to do that.

“When you’re playing in a team and you’re confident, getting good results and then you go straight into a team that is just starting the season – it can only be a good thing for Rangers.”

Balogun has already caught the eye during his spell with the Gers, so much so that The Athletic journalist Jordan Campbell took to Twitter during Sunday’s win to call him an “exceptional” signing.

The defender played 11 matches for Wigan during his loan spell from Brighton last term, helping the Latics to keep six clean sheets in the process.
