'Talented lad' - Darren Fletcher backs Joe Aribo for big season at Rangers in 20/21
Darren Fletcher has heaped praise on Joe Aribo and claimed that he can be a very influential figure for Rangers this season.
The 24-year-old midfielder has been in fine form this preseason, scoring twice in his last two games going into yesterday’s clash against Aberdeen.
The Nigeria international put in another impressive display against the Dons in a 1-0 that saw the Gers get their title push off to the best possible start.
And speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of that match (Sky Sport Main Event, 12pm, August 1st), Fletcher was eager to sing Aribo’s praises.
The former Manchester United man said: “Rangers have had a fantastic preseason, and he’s scored two fantastic goals in that.
“I think the jump from Charlton Athletic – we talk about coming to big clubs and not knowing what to expect. I think he struggled for inconsistency a little bit last season, but he’ll benefit from playing up here for a season, knowing what it’s about.
“He’s a talented lad, he’s a physical specimen, he’s great on the ball. He makes things happen in midfield for Rangers. He drives them forward.
“I’d like to see more assists and goals from him, I think he’s definitely got that in his game. But I’m expecting him to kick on this season and be one of Rangers’ most influential players.”
How good can Aribo this season?
The early signs have definitely been promising.
Aribo looked unplayable at times in preseason, and he looked pretty impressive against the Dons too.
The midfielder had a 100% pass completion rate, as well as completing 1.6 interceptions more than his career average, as per Wyscout.
He has the talent and presence to be a real asset for the Gers this season and now, as Fletcher points out, it’s just a case of him maintaining some consistency too.
In other Rangers news, Alfredo Morelos has commented on reports claiming he has agreement with Lille.
