‘Back with a bang’ – Many Rangers fans react to Morelos display v St. Mirren
Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos looked like a man transformed on Sunday afternoon.
After a dreadful display in midweek which saw him fail to register a single shot on goal against Bayer Leverkusen – as well as just eight successful passes in 80 minutes [Wyscout] – he bounced back with a stunning brace in the 3-0 win over St. Mirren.
And his overall game was much improved too.
Eight shots, four on target, and an xG of 1.6 – this was more like watching the Morelos of old than the imposter we’ve seen since the turn of the year.
And it’s fair to say that supporters were delighted by his performance.
Hordes of Rangers fans took to social media to sing the Colombian’s praises, and rightly so.
Whereas in midweek he looked disinterested and apathetic, this time out he looked determined to impact the match in a positive way.
His two goals were absolutely vital, and with Celtic slipping up later in the day, it’s advantage Gers in the title race already.
But how far into that title push Morelos will go remains to be seen.
It had looked for all the world as if he was destined to leave the Gers for Lille this summer, but the French club look set to snap up Jonathan David in a deal worth around £27 million, and that makes likelihood of El Bufalo going to France a whole lot lower.
You would assume that Morelos will still have suitors this summer, and maybe Sunday’s performance was his way of putting himself in the shop window, but all we know is that if he keeps on churning out displays like this one, it’s going to be even harder to say goodbye to him.
