Report – Rangers table bid for Gassama, Valladolid chief Ronaldo does not accept

Rangers are interested in Real Valladolid striker Sekou Gassama, according to the print edition of Spanish outlet AS.

The Senegal international hit nine goals during a loan spell with La Liga 2 outfit CD Fuenlabrada last season, and is due to return to his parent club this month.

It is understood that a bid of around £2.7 million has been submitted for the 25-year-old, with AS stating that they have taken steps to confirm that an offer has actually been tabled.

But despite that bid being submitted, the report also states that Valladolid’s owner, Brazilian legend Ronaldo, has not accepted it.

Partially, that is because the club believe the player is worth more, and partially it is because there is no urgency to raise funds since defender Mohammed Salisu made an eight-figure switch to Southampton.

Gassama is under contract with Valladolid until 2024 – another factor that gives them the advantage in any negotiations.

What should we make of this?

Rangers may well have made a bid for Gassama, and we have no reason to disbelieve an outlet as reputable as AS on the matter.

But if an offer was submitted, it’s hard to see the Gers following up on it now.

Less than a week ago, Rangers rubber-stamped the double signing of both Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten, and while Alfredo Morelos may still leave, you would have to ask whether Steven Gerrard will be willing to make a move for a third striker this summer.

We’re not so sure he would, especially when Gassama has a poorer goals per game rate than Itten, and a poorer shot accuracy than Roofe, as per Wyscout.

We would be surprised if this one actually happens.
