Report – Hibernian interested in summer move for Rangers midfielder McCrorie

Hibernian are eyeing up a move for Rangers midfielder Ross McCrorie this summer, according to the Daily Record

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at League One outfit Portsmouth, and it is understood that the English club would be open to the possibility of taking him back to Fratton Park for the 2020/21 campaign.

If they do, they will likely face competition from Hibs though, who are eager to land the player in the coming weeks.

Jack Ross’ men took Greg Docherty on loan from Ibrox last term, and it is understood that they would also be interested in taking the 23-year-old back to Easter Road, alongside McCrorie.

The Record suggest that it is unclear at this stage whether the Gers would be willing to sell the latter, or whether a loan deal would have to be a thrashed out.

Would a move to Hibs be good for Docherty?

Personally, and this is no disrespect to Hibs, we think McCrorie could be aiming even higher than a move to Easter Road.

The 22-year-old impressed during his spell with Portsmouth, so much so that Pompey are keen on taking him back to the south coast.

If circumstances had work out differently, the English side could easily have been in the Championship this coming season, and the fact that they have been discussing the possibility of returning next season as far back as April would seemingly suggest that they believe he is capable of cutting it at that level.

Right now, McCrorie isn’t quite at the level he would need to be at to compete for a regular starting spot at Ibrox.

As per Wyscout, Ryan Jack registers more completed passes, more interceptions, and more accurate shots than his younger teammate.

But why not send McCrorie back to England, perhaps even to a Championship club, and let him continue his development south of the border?

There’s nothing wrong with the Scottish Premiership, but surely the ceiling of potential is just that little bit higher in the English second tier.
