Ibrox Exclusive: Alex Bruce claims ‘big fee’ Zungu deal would be ‘gamble’ for Rangers

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Rangers will be taking a “gamble” if they make a move for South Africa midfielder Bongani Zungu this summer, according to Alex Bruce.

Speaking to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender claimed that there is always a risk involved with bringing a player in who has never competed in British football before – especially when Steven Gerrard needs instant results from his squad this season.

A £3.6 million move had looked as if it was on the brink on completion last month, but The Scotsman have since reported that the transfer has been cast into doubt as discussions over a personal agreement between the 27-year-old international and the Gers have stalled.

But Bruce believes that even if a deal can be struck, Rangers still need to be somewhat wary.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “It’s always a gamble signing a foreign player.

“You never know how they’re going to fit into a club, the surroundings and the environment.

“But I just hope the lad does well if he does sign. He needs him to come in and hit the ground running for Steven.

“We’ll see how it goes. It is a big fee for a Scottish club to pay out, but in the grand scheme of European football, £3.6 million is nothing.”

Zungu currently plies his trade with French outfit Amiens SC, and featured in 21 Ligue 1 matches last term.

The energetic midfielder also has 24 caps for his country, scoring twice over the course of his international career.
