Report – Rangers set to open personal talks with Bongani Zungu, player ‘extremely excited’

Rangers are closing in on the signing of South Africa international midfielder Bongani Zungu, according to The Scotsman

The 27-year-old is keen to leave current employers Amiens following their relegation from the top flight of French football.

And it is understood that the Gers are nearing an agreement that would bring him to Ibrox this summer.

As per The Scotsman, Steven Gerrard’s men have opened talks over a personal agreement with the player and have taken a step closer to finalising his move.

A long term deal is believed to be on the table, with a three year contract being mooted.

It is also understood that a fee of around £3.6 million has been preliminarily agreed between the two clubs.

For his part, Zungu is said to be “extremely excited” about the prospect of a move.

Is this a good move from Rangers?

It’s certainly a positive update, and one that really hammers home the Gers’ ambition in the transfer market.

A big money move for a 24-cap international in the prime of his career is always going to go over well with fans, and if the player is eager, that’s a real added bonus.

Statistically, he more than measures up too.

According to Wyscout, the 27-year-old has made more interceptions, contested more duels, and completed a higher percentage of long and through balls than Ryan Jack this season.

That’s no mean feat, and bringing him in to provide depth and competition could be a really smart piece of business as the Gers look to push Celtic all the way in the upcoming title race.
