Jim White: Gerrard has ‘absolutely no interest’ in leaving Rangers for Bristol City

Steven Gerrard has “absolutely no interest” in leaving Rangers for Bristol City this summer, according to Jim White.

The Gers boss has emerged as a target for the Robins following the dismissal of Lee Johnson earlier this month, according to the Daily Express.

But White has made it very clear that the Ibrox manager has no intention of leaving his post in Glasgow to move south of the border.

Speaking on talkSPORT, the respected journalist said: “It is our understanding, and we can put this to bed, that Steven Gerrard will be staying with Rangers as he has absolutely no interest in being anywhere else other than Rangers.”

Gerrard oversaw a 2-0 win for his side against Lyon on Thursday evening, with an own goal from the French side and a second half strike from Ianis Hagi securing an impressive victory.

What can we make of White’s update?

There’s no two ways about it, this is a really positive thing.

It always felt as if a move to Bristol City was unlikely, but having a reporter of White’s stature put the matter to bed is a source of some relief.

Gerrard seems to be really attacking this transfer window, bringing in Ianis Hagi, Jon McLaughlin, and Calvin Bassey already ahead of a title race with Celtic next season.

The prospect of him laying all of that groundwork and then walking out on the club seems utterly absurd, especially when you consider how strongly he has emphasised his desire to stay in the recent past.

Hopefully, White’s update will indeed bring an end to the story, and Gerrard and his squad can start looking ahead to the 2020/21 campaign without any other distractions.
