England int’l James Maddison sends Insta message to Rangers new boy Calvin Bassey
England international James Maddison has taken to Instagram to send a message to Rangers new boy Calvin Bassey.
The young defender made his debut for the Gers in a friendly against Hamilton on Friday afternoon.
And he had quite the impact, scoring a thumping header in a 2-1 win over Accies.
Writing on his personal Instagram account after the match, the versatile new arrival said: “Happy to make my debut and happy to cap it off with a win and a goal #withGodanythingispossible.
“Come on the Gers”.
Responding to that post, his former Leicester City teammate Maddison said: “Yeah yeaaaaa”, followed by a flame emoji.
What can we make of Bassey’s debut?
In a lot of respects, not too much.
The reality is that a friendly against a rusty Hamilton side is hardly the biggest test, and there would have been real alarm bells ringing if we had slumped to anything other than a win in this one.
That being said, there were definite positives to be taken from the match, and Bassey’s goal was one of them.
Strong and commanding in the air, the defender may have just proven to Steven Gerrard that he doesn’t have to look too far to find cover for the injured Nikola Katic in the coming weeks.
Bassey is known for being able to play at the heart of defence as well as at left-back, and if Gerrard can get away without splashing out on a new centre-half, he surely will.
Another bonus here was seeing Alfredo Morelos back on the scoresheet.
Again, it was hardly the Champions League final, and he may have scored from the penalty spot, but anything we can do to reignite his confidence after a turgid 2020 can only be a good thing.
