‘Great piece of business’ – Many Rangers fans delighted by McCrorie contract extension
Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to express their delight at Robby McCrorie signing a new deal with the club.
The Gers announced on Friday that the young goalkeeper has put pen to paper on a contract that will keep him in Glasgow until at least 2023.
Questions had been raised recently about what the future held for the stopper after the Gers made a move to sign Jon McLaughlin on a free transfer last month.
But Rangers have seemingly put any fears of McCrorie leaving to bed by tying him down to a new deal.
And we think this is a superb piece of business.
Make no mistake, McCrorie is a player with massive potential.
Having spent the season out on loan, first at Queen of the South and then at Livingston, the youngster has averaged 3.03 saves per game this term, with a reflex rate of 55.4%, as per Wyscout.
That’s more saves than Allan McGregor, and only 0.3% lower than the veteran stopper’s reflex save rate.
McCrorie has also conceded less than a goal a game, despite having an xCG of 1.11.
His long passing accuracy is also higher than McGregor’s.
Of course, right now, he is unlikely to displace McGregor as Rangers’ number one.
But that’s why the signing of McLaughlin is such a smart move.
By bringing in a keeper of such experience and quality, Steven Gerrard has adequately filled the void left by Wes Foderingham – to the extent that it should free up McCrorie for another loan spell away.
Sending him out again would give him plenty of opportunity to further his development, and by the time he returns – whether it be next season or the season after – he should hopefully be somewhere near challenging for that number one spot at Ibrox.
