Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce claims Gerrard leaving Rangers for Birmingham would be ‘strange one’
We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…
Alex Bruce has claimed that it would be a “strange” move for Steven Gerrard to leave Rangers for a club like Birmingham City.
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that the Gers boss will be determined to build on the foundation he has already laid in Glasgow so that he can “knock Celtic off their perch”.
According to Football Insider, the Birmingham made an approach for Gerrard last week, but were promptly snubbed by the 40-year-old.
And Bruce is not surprised that Gerrard’s focus remains fully on his project with Rangers.
Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “In my opinion, it would be a strange one for him to leave Rangers to go to Birmingham because of what he’s built there.
“I’m sure he wants to try and have another year at least trying to knock Celtic off their perch.
“We’ll just have to wait and see, but when you’re a player and a person who has the reputation that Steven Gerrard does within the game, it doesn’t surprise me that he’s in demand from other clubs.
“It’s part and parcel of being a big name.”
Gerrard recently celebrated his second anniversary at Ibrox, but is still yet to lift a trophy with the Gers.
He has approached this summer with impressive urgency, however, and has already secured deals for Ianis Hagi, Jon McLaughlin, and Calvin Bassey as he looks to build a squad capable of usurping Celtic as Premiership champions.
