Report – Rangers enquire about 20y/o goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic
Rangers have made an enquiry for 20-year-old goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, according to Italian outlet Foot Mercato.
The youngster currently plies his trade for FC Cukaricki in Serbia, and has made 25 appearances in all competitions this season, keeping seven clean sheets in the process.
The report from Foot Mercato states that OGC Nice, Paris FC, Getafe, Anderlecht, and KV Mechelen are also keen on the stopper.
The Italian outlet suggest that a bid for the player could be made in the coming weeks, with Rangers understood to be just as keen as their continental rivals.
The news comes after Gers completed a deal for Jon McLaughlin earlier this month, bringing in the 32-year-old as cover for veteran number one Allan McGregor.
Will Rangers actually pursue Petrovic?
This is a really interesting one.
At first glance, you would be inclined to say no.
After all, the Gers have a settled number on, have just brought in a well-qualified number two, and even have an exciting third choice waiting in the wings in the shape of young Robby McCrorie.
But the clue here could be Petrovic’s age.
With McCrorie impressing during loan spells at Queen of the South and Livingston last season, it wouldn’t bee too much of a surprise to see him shipped out again this term to help him further his progression.
That would leave Gerrard with Andy Firth as his third choice option, and with just seven minutes of senior football under his belt since he joined the Gers, there’s not a great deal to suggest that the manager genuinely views him as somebody capable of stepping up to the plate if required.
With that in mind, there’s no reason to suggest that Gerrard couldn’t be looking at strengthening his depth between the sticks, and at just 20, it would make perfect sense for him to sign a player who wouldn’t demand first team football, but who also has a high ceiling of potential.
