Ibrox Exclusive: Bruce suggests Gerrard will be delighted with progress of Rangers loanee Kelly

We’re delighted to welcome former Scottish Premiership defender Alex Bruce as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Rangers…

Steven Gerrard will be delighted with the progress made by Rangers youngster Stephen Kelly over the past season, according to Alex Bruce.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Kilmarnock defender suggested that the midfielder’s improvement during his loan spell with Ayr United this term is a prime example of the kind of standard that the Gers boss will want his loanees to set.

Kelly was awarded Young Player of the Year for Ayr in 2019/20, and has since been rewarded with a new deal at his parent club.

The 20-year-old will head out on loan to top flight side Ross County next term, with the Gers retaining the option to recall him in January.

And Bruce claims that his manager will be very pleased with his advancement.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “Of course Gerrard will be happy, and we’ve seen it many times before.

“When players who are young are going out and achieving things like King going out and getting player of the year, it’s obviously a good thing.

“It’s like what Reece James [Chelsea full-back] did at Wigan Athletic – when you go to a lesser club and you go and grab the bull by the horns and you get in the team of the seasons and what have you, it creates awareness.

“That’s exactly what Steven will want from his young players.”

Kelly has made just one senior appearance for the Gers so far, but impressed during his time with Ayr, hitting six goals and four assists in 33 outings for the Championship side.

Ibrox News have already taken an in-depth look at Kelly’s time with Ayr, and the hope will be that his loan spell with Ross County will give him all the opportunities he needs to establish himself as a Premiership-ready talent.
