Report – Rangers make enquires about Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu

Rangers have made an approach for Amiens midfielder Bongani Zungu, according to France Football.

The 27-year-old has previously stated that he is keen to leave the recently-relegated French side this summer.

The South Africa international has 24 caps for his country and is understood to be valued at around £2.7 million by his current employers.

The report suggests that Steven Gerrard has made enquiries to several sources about the player’s availability over the coming months.

However, any potential move for the talent could be complicated by his insistence that a move to La Liga would be his dream destination.

Speaking to Get French Football News, he said: “I would love to play in Spain, in La Liga.

“I think the league is nice, the teams play football, and yeah I would like to hopefully get a club in Spain.”

Is Zungu somebody Rangers should be pursuing?

The likelihood is that Steven Gerrard will feel that he has to add quality strength and depth to his midfield this summer if his side are to mount a sustained push in the title race next season.

When Ryan Jack was injured at points this term, the Gers looked like a much less stable unit, and it’s an issue that has been noticed by Barry Ferguson too, who has stated a new midfielder will be high on the club’s wish list.

And Zungu looks like he’s got the qualities needed to be a decent covering option at the very least.

Granted, his pass completion rate is 4% worse than Jack’s, as per Wyscout, but at 86.1%, it’s still an impressive enough tally.

Moreover, in other areas, he actually outshines the Ibrox favourite.

The South African makes more interceptions, contests more duels, and completes a higher percentage of long and through balls.

He might not be good enough to displace Jack in the starting XI, but if the price is right and if he can be convinced that he’d rather move to Glasgow than Spain, this would be a smart move from the Gers.
