Giovanni Van Bronckhorst voices support for Rangers boss Gerrard

Former Rangers defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst has voiced his support for current Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard.

The Dutchman, who featured 70 times for the Gers over the course of a three-year spell north of the border, suggested that Gerrard is “doing a really good job” in Glasgow.

The 45-year-old also insisted that the gap between Rangers and their bitter rivals Celtic is narrowing, and expressed his hope that Gerrard will be able to guide the club to a long-awaited Scottish Premiership title.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “I can only look with pride and a smile on my face on my wonderful years at Rangers.

“The gap between Rangers and Celtic is getting closer and hopefully Steven Gerrard will make Rangers champions again. He’s doing a really good job.

Does Gerrard deserve this kind of praise?
We certainly think so, yes.
Gerrard seems to have come in for a considerable amount of criticism in 2020, with Chris Sutton accusing him of selling his players out in post-match comments and Kris Boyd claiming that the boss has a “lot of thinking to do” about his future in Glasgow, to name just a couple of examples.
Perhaps that is understandable on some level given how poor the Gers have been since the turn of the year, but the fact remains that the side is steadily improving under Gerrard.
This season, he has seen his points per game average jump from 2.00 to 2.31.
In real world terms, that means that his team have picked up 67 points in 29 matches, while it took them 33 matches to reach 66 points last term.
Of course, there is still work to be done – the fact that Celtic have been crowned champions illustrates that point all too readily – but van Bronckhorst is absolutely right, things are moving in the right direction.
