Davie Provan backs call for Rangers SPFL investigation

Davie Provan has revealed that he is in favour of Scottish teams backing Rangers’ call for an independent investigation into the SPFL.

All 42 member clubs are set for a historic EGM on Tuesday, with the governing body facing the prospect of a probe into April’s ballot on ending the lower league season early.

The vote will be the culmination of a bitter dispute between the SPFL and the Gers, who released a 200-page dossier of evidence against the organisation last week.

And Provan has claimed that an inquiry must be launched in an effort to resolve this shambolic period that the Scottish game has endured recently.

Writing in a column for the Scottish Sun, he said: “Given the embarrassing shambles that’s been unfolding in front of us since the Good Friday voting fiasco, I’d hope clubs vote in favour.

“It’s quite apparent that since the first whistle, the SPFL have been desperate to put this season to bed.

“The whole situation of one club, Dundee, having so much leverage entering into big decisions with the SPFL board is like something from election day in a banana republic. It’s almost too ridiculous to be real and it feels like the SPFL board are the only ones who can’t see how this looks from the outside.

“Why — given the embarrassment the SPFL have served on the game — wouldn’t they allow an independent set of eyes to have a look if they’ve nothing to fear?”

What can we make of Provan’s comments?

It says something when Davie Provan is siding with the Gers.

The ex-Celtic man is hardly our biggest fan, but he’s clearly put his allegiances to one side and is speaking a lot of sense here.

Anybody can see that April’s vote was a shambles, and even if the governing body didn’t act illegally, they messed things up so comprehensively that an investigation feels like a very sensible demand from the Gers.

Moreover, as Provan points out, if the SPFL have nothing to hide, they should have nothing to worry about in the event of an inquiry being launched.

Alongside Provan, the likes of Michael Stewart, Charlie Nicholas, and Kris Commons have all spoken out in favour of a probe, and if that gang of Parkhead sympathisers can put their loyalties aside for the good of the Scottish game, you would hope that Scottish club chiefs can follow suit.
