‘Utterly shameful’ – Chris Sutton fumes over ‘shocking’ UEFA report that could affect Rangers

Chris Sutton has slammed UEFA for their “reprehensible” treatment of Celtic and Rangers during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

All football in Scotland is currently suspended in an effort to help arrest the spread of the virus, with no indication of when it will resume.

But the governing body has claimed that any decision to void the Premiership season could lead to bans from European competitions for Scottish sides next term, as per the Scottish Sun.

And Sutton has been left incensed by the call.

Writing in a column for the Daily Record, he said: “UEFA are a reprehensible organisation.

“Their attempts to bully and push around smaller nations for their own gain is as disgusting as it is utterly shameful.

“Health over wealth is the mantra which a struggling world is living within at the moment.

“Telling clubs such as Celtic and Rangers their European places are in jeopardy if they go against what UEFA wants, and by doing what may ultimately help people in their own country, is quite shocking, frankly.”

Is Sutton right about this one?

This is a complex and multi-faceted issue, of course, but you would be tempted to agree with the pundit here.

That may be a rarity, but the fact of the matter is that it is not fair for UEFA to be trying to whip their members federations into shape by threatening them with punitive actions right now.

There is a lot of confusion and worry going on right now, and the last thing that anybody needs is the threat of serious financial hardship hanging over them.

But make no mistake, that is what UEFA are trying to impose.

Yes, we can’t live in limbo forever, and a decision must be reached at some point, but by effectively taking away one of the more realistic solutions, UEFA are trying to force countries into doing things their way.

That’s not fair, and it could prove to be a massive blow to both the Old Firm, and the Scottish game writ large.
