SFA chief delivers major update on plans for season amid Rangers uncertainty
SFA chief Ian Maxwell has claimed that there are no plans to cancel the rest of the Scottish Premiership season, giving Rangers a chance to still catch bitter rivals Celtic at the summit.
All football in Scotland is currently suspended due to the Coronavirus pandemic, with no clear sign of when it will return.
But Maxwell has insisted that there is no appetite to declare the campaign null and void.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, as per the Scottish Sun, he said: “I don’t think there is a consideration for cancellation, I think it’s the same concerns that the English Premier League have in terms of broadcast contracts and contractual obligations that will apply to every league across the world.
“The income is vital regardless of what the headline number is and it’s important we get games finished.
“Everyone wants to get the games played, the guys who get the winner’s medals at the end of the season want to know they’ve played every match and no-one can come back and say they didn’t deserve it in any way.”
What does this mean?
At the moment, it’s still hard to say for definite, but if we take Maxwell’s comments at face value then this can only be good news.
While there is still any possibility of catching Celtic at the top of the table the league cannot be called off, purely because it would threaten the integrity of Scottish football.
And while Maxwell’s comments do little to shed any light on how this issue will be resolved, at the very least we should be able to take some encouragement from them and what they could mean for our hopes of performing an incredible turnaround at the top of the table.
