Gerrard singles out one player for praise after Rangers 1-1 draw v Porto

Rangers battled their way back to win a point away at Porto on Thursday night, which represents a really strong result in Europe.

The home side took the lead when Luis Diaz scored a wonder goal after 36 minutes.

But Rangers didn’t buckle and Borna Barisic set-up Alfredo Morelos for the equalising goal just before half-time.

Neither side could fashion a winner and the result leaves Rangers in second in the group after Young Boys beat Feyenoord in the other Group G game.

Steven Gerrard singled out Barisic for praise in his pre-Motherwell press conference on Friday afternoon.

As quoted by the official Rangers Twitter account, Gerrard said, “I think I am satisfied at the moment at the group, of course, we feel we should have taken something from Young Boys, having said that it is a strong start in a tough group. The players’ performance last night was outstanding

“I think our players are learning our style and we have players in terrific form, Borna for example. Players here want to learn and grow.”

Barisic came in for criticism last season after his £2.2m move from NK Osijek but he has really started finding his form and he said after the game, “I probably proved my doubters wrong but I know all the time that I can play very good football here. Now when I get in shape I am sharp and I show all of my quality. I still feel I can show more in the future.”

Rangers play Motherwell at home on Sunday at 3pm, and while Gerrard has said the side is better equipped for Thursday/Sunday games, it’s time to prove that after slipping off the top of the table following the 1-1 draw with Hearts last weekend.
