Ibrox View: Dave King must push PL side away in Jan, title could depend on it

It’s been reported that Rangers have stuck a £20m+ price tag on the head of Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos, amid interest from Aston Villa.

The Premier League side want a new striker in the January window and have targetted the Gers frontman but Football Insider claims that Dave King won’t let him go without a fight.

That’s good news. £20m is a lot of money for a striker who’s prolific but untested in the top-flight.

It might be hard to turn down but there are bigger treasures to fight for at Rangers at the moment.

Morelos has scored 15 goals this season and secured a point for his side in the 1-1 draw with Hearts on Sunday.

Jermain Defoe is scoring for fun at the moment, too. He’s got 12 this season, including nine in seven in the league.

However, Defoe is also 37 years old and while he’s not injury prone, he’s not going to be able to sustain a title challenge all season on his own.

With Defoe and Morelos scoring for Rangers there’s a real chance of winning the title and getting into the Champions League. That’s the most important thing for Rangers at the moment. And that’s where the long-term money lies.

Selling Morelos at a huge profit should be something that Dave King only considers in the summer.
