BBC pundit and some fans react as Ross Wilson confirmed as new Rangers Sporting Director

Rangers have confirmed that Ross Wilson has signed as new Sporting Director, following the departure of Mark Allen.

Wilson arrives from Southampton, where he spent the last four-and-a-half years as Director of Football Operations.

Rangers MD Stewart Robinson said, “We have been aware of the capabilities and expertise of Ross for a long time and when we found we had to move for someone to fill the role left vacant by the departure of Mark Allen, we had no hesitation in looking again to Ross, who is highly regarded within the game.

“He has a terrific track record and he shares our view of what is required to restore Rangers as the dominant force in Scottish football. Ross also shares our vision, and that of our manager Steven Gerrard, of where we want to position this Club in the years ahead.”

Reactions to Robinson’s appointment have been overwhelmingly positive – from most quarters.

BBC Sportsound pundit Tam McManus said, “Ross is brilliant at what he does. Great addition for Rangers.”

Plenty of Rangers fans were pleased with the news, too, with a couple wanting the club to “Announce Messi”.

However, there are some Southampton fans who aren’t sorry to see him go and sent a warning out to their counterparts north of the border.

One said that Wilson arrived after most of the big players who went on to sign for Liverpool and said, “Our recruitment since then has been shambolic. Not many south of the border are upset to see him leave”.

It’s a fair point. Sadio Mane, Victor Wanyama, Dusan Tadic, Nathaniel Clyne, Luke Shaw, Toby Alderweireld and Morgan Schneiderlin were all at the club when Wilson arrived.

However, he has one huge credit to his name in Virgil van Dijk, who he helped bring to Southampton, who went on to make a massive profit on his when he was sold to Liverpool.

Also, we’re not sure quite how much of this is bitterness and how much an honest, objective view of what he’s achieved.

The jury might still be out but we’re very happy to see him arrive.
