Sky Sports pundit Andy Walker has predicted that this season’s Premiership race will be a thrilling one and thinks that Rangers have every chance of pipping rivals Celtic to the title.
Rangers are top of the league after Celtic dropped five points in their last two games, drawing to Hibs before losing to Livingston after Ryan Christie was sent off on Thursday.
By contrast, Rangers have been absolutely dominating in the league since their 2-0 defeat by Celtic – the only blemish on an otherwise perfect Premiership record.
They’ve scored 14 goals without reply in their last three league games, against St Johnstone, Aberdeen and Hamilton, and Walker believes that strikers Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe could be the difference-makers in the 19/20 domestic league.
“I think you have to admire Rangers and the way they have responded,” said Walker in his Sky Sports column.
“Aside from the [Europa League] defeat against Young Boys, their response has been terrific.
“I don’t think we’re going to see many points given up by Celtic and Rangers. Admittedly, Celtic have followed up a draw with a defeat. I think they’re going to prove to be really debilitating in their quest for the title.
“If Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe steer clear of injury I think Rangers have every chance [of winning the title]. I think from middle to front they’re creating chances. Connor Goldson is looking strong at the back but he’s also popping up with a regular goal or two.
“The response since losing to Celtic has been absolutely first class. And, make no doubt, the title race is going right to the end of the season.”
Defoe got a hat-trick in the latest 5-0 win against Hamilton and is now the top-scorer in the Premiership.
Morelos was top-scorer last season and the duo are arguably the two best strikers in the league at the moment. Like Walker said, if they can stay fit and if Morelos can learn how to score against Celtic, there’s every chance Steven Gerrard can lift the big one at the end of this season.
