Why Rangers want to bring Jayden Meghoma back as talks open with Brentford
Rangers are in talks with Brentford over the possibility to bring Jayden Meghoma back.
The Englishman spent last season on loan at Ibrox where he made 44 appearances across all competitions.
However, following the arrival of Tuur Rommens, the Brentford defender was relegated to second choice under Danny Rohl.
Rangers, though, are in need of a back-up for the Belgian, who is the only recognised left-back at the Glasgow side.
Talks over a deal for James Penrice were opened, but the Gers are seemingly keeping their options open.
And a deal for Meghoma could be moving quickly as per reports.
When could Jayden Meghoma make Rangers return?
Rangers' deal to sign Meghoma last season did not include an option to keep him.
However, it seems they do want him to return and help boost the numbers for Derek McInnes' side.
According to Sky Sports, Rangers are now in talks over a move to bring Meghoma back to Glasgow. The move would be yet another loan deal.
They share that if terms can be agreed, things could move quickly with Meghoma possibly being named in Rangers' squad to take on St Mirren on Sunday.
The Gers face the Buddies in the League Cup as they hope to knockout last season's winners.
Obtaining another left-sided fullback is key for McInnes, with fears over the current fitness of Rommens.
The Belgian is being assessed ahead of the Bears' Europa League qualifer against Jagellonia Bialystok, with Rangers 2-1 down following the first-leg.
Why Meghoma return does and doesn't make sense
The move for Meghoma is two-fold as there are clear pros and clear cons to making a move.
On one-hand, signing a player who understands Rangers and the style of play in Scotland is smart.
His adaptatation period will be minimised, with only needing to come to terms with McInnes' style.
However, Meghoma fell down the pecking order last season after being deemed not good enough for the G51 outfit.
Rommens would ultimately takeover and maintain his role as starting left-back.
But, if the 20-year-old is willing to play that role once more and potentially fight for his place, then it does seem like a no-brainer.
It is only a temporary solution, but it would give the Gers more time to locate a permanent back-up for next summer and focus on other priorities this window.
