Why Rangers have short-term Jamie Vardy transfer solution for the right price
Rangers have been backed to sign former Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy as a free agent.
The striker left Cremonese after spending one season in Italy and is available this transfer window.
With Derek McInnes in search of a new striker after Youssef Chermiti's injury, the Englishman's name has been suggested as an option to bolster the Gers' attack.
Vardy would certainly be a decent short-term addition at Ibrox.
The 39-year-old scored 200 goals in 500 appearances for Leicester before leaving them last summer.
In Serie A last season, the veteran striker showed he can still contribute at the highest level, and the Glaswegian outfit have been told to make a move.
What could make Rangers transfer for Jamie Vardy a reality
Vardy has vast Premier League experience after making history with Leicester.
The former England international could undoubtedly be a valuable addition up north, just like Jermain Defoe.
Ex-Scottish attacker Gordon Dalziel believes that if the finances made sense, the Glaswegian outfit should take a gamble on Vardy.
The centre-forward may still have what it takes to consistently contribute goals for the Govan side, at least for the 2026-27 campaign.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on 19 August, Dalziel said, "If the wages were sensible and fitted in with the rest of the club, I would take a punt on him. I do think, for one season, I still think up here he would have the ability to go and score goals."
What Derek McInnes has just said about Ibrox striker transfer plans
McInnes still has Lawrence Shankland, Ryan Naderi and Bojan Miovski at his disposal after Chermiti's injury.
While the Portuguese forward might have been a big part of the Scottish manager's plans at Rangers, he still has plenty of options for the attack.
Instead of playing with two number nines, the ex-Hearts boss can always start with just one.
It doesn't look like McInnes wants to make any compromises with his style of play, though, with the search for a striker on at Ibrox.
Speaking to the media before the Jablonec game, the 55-year-old head coach said, "It wasn't an area we were initially looking to address, but Youssef's injury has changed that. Every day, the staff are actively trying to source good options and see whether we can bring one in."
Chermiti will return to action sooner rather than later and a short-term solution like Vardy to reinforce the attack wouldn't be the worst idea.
