Why Rangers have reason to cancel Adama Sidibeh pursuit as Stockport update drops

Rangers will likely be crossing Adama Sidibeh's name off their transfer shortlist now amid news emerging out of Stockport County.

The 28-year-old has emerged in Rangers transfer discussions over recent days.

Playing his football in England's third-tier with Stockport, Sidibeh made his professional breakthrough with St Johnstone.

The Gambian international played 80 times for St Johnstone and scored 18 goals between 2024-2026, before joining Stockport in last season's winter transfer window.

He netted 10 times in 25 total appearances for County last term, and may have been a player Rangers identified as being able to push the likes of Bojan Miovski for a prominent backup role.

Unfortunately, had he indeed been a player Ibrox chiefs admired this summer, they may now have to pause any idea of bringing him to Govan for the time being.

Ibrox News discussed Sidibeh's non-league background and rise to St Johnstone stardom amid links to Rangers this summer.

However, brief unconfirmed reports emerged on Tuesday suggesting that Sidibeh had collected a hamstring injury that may sideline him for up to six weeks.

And in an X post from Sam Byrne, Stockport County reporter for the Manchester Evening News, he's reaffirmed the understanding that Sidibeh has indeed suffered a hamstring injury and will now miss the start of the new campaign.

There's a real chance Sidibeh now won't be fit in time for the Scottish Premiership transfer deadline at 5pm on 3 September, and that may put Rangers off from acquiring him if they had an instant role planned for him.

Stockport's first competitive fixture is on 8 August in the League Cup, before their League One season begins on 15 August away at Plymouth.

Despite only joining Stockport at the halfway point of last season, Sidibeh hit the ground running with the Hatters almost immediately.

As per FotMob, his 0.52 goals per game average ranked him in the top 15.6 percentile of English League One strikers last term, whilst his 0.72 expected goals (xG) on target number placed him in the leading 2.2 per cent.

He also ranked in the highest 4.4 per cent for his 1.21 headed shots per game, as well as placing in the top 10 percentile for his 1.30 shot on target per 90 average.

Sidibeh ranked among the very best in his position in numerous other areas per 90 minutes too, such as his 6.50 duels won, 5.54 touches in the opposition box, 0.09 times dribbled past and 0.95 times dispossessed.

Quick, physical, and with a clear eye for goal, Sidibeh would be an intriguing addition to Rangers' frontline, and profiles as a type of striker Derek McInnes doesn't currently have available to him at Ibrox.
