What it means for Rangers as 'significant' clause update emerges for Olwethu Makhanya transfer

Rangers are closing on another summer signing with the addition of Philadelphia Union defender Olwethu Makhanya.

The Gers have been extremely proactive in their transfer business in the current window.

Ivor Pandur, Ross McCrorie, Ben Godfrey, Dan Neil, Cammy Devlin, Lawrence Shankland, and Vanja Dragojevic has all arrived this summer.

But new boss Derek McInnes said after the pre-season draw with West Ham United that he expects further new arrivals.

South Africa international Makhanya quickly emerged as a player that Rangers were close to completing a deal for.

And a new update has now emerged providing further details on the make-up of Rangers deal for the 22-year-old.

What do we know about Rangers' Olwethu Makhanya deal?

There had been a sense that Rangers' next transfer focus would be on adding more thrust to their attacking ranks.

But it is felt that another centre-back is needed to complement Godfrey and Emmanuel Fernandez, with John Souttar apparently out of favour.

Ibrox News previously reported how the fee Rangers will pay to land Makhanya from the Union had dropped.

Now, according to the Athletic, the Union will receive a fee in the region of £3.38million for selling Makhanya to Rangers.

However, the report adds that the Union will retain a "significant" sell-on clause in the deal to allow Makhanya to head to Ibrox.

What does Makhanya's sell-on clause mean for Rangers?

In truth, it is unlikely Rangers would receive an international defender at the age of 22 without agreeing to some sort of sell-on clause.

Essentially, it protects Union in the future if Makhanya really progresses at Ibrox and Rangers receive a lucrative fee later down the road.

It does mean, though, that if Rangers were to one day cash in that they will need to make sure they receive a big enough fee that ensures they are not hit too much by the significant clause inserted into the deal.

However, it feels like Rangers are getting a very good talent, who has just played at the World Cup, for a decent fee and with an extremely high ceiling.

It could end up being a deal that suits all parties, and it feels like this one will get over the line in the very near future.
