Rangers wouldn't have to worry about Stephy Mavididi's ability levels if he moves to Ibrox this summer.

With Mikey Moore now back at Tottenham, Rangers have a void to fill down their left flank.

Moore netted seven times and provided four assists in 47 games for Gers last season, and was undoubtedly one of the best players in the side.

So, whoever is tasked with replacing him will have sizeable boots to fill, and questions will need to be answered if it's to be Leicester's Mavididi.

The 28-year-old looks likely to leave Leicester this summer following their shock relegation to League One in 2025-26, England's third division.

But, if he is to take the escape route up to Govan, then he'll be bringing some high praise with him from one of his former managers.

The Stephy Mavididi trait Enzo Maresca feels holds him back

Ibrox News has reported on Rangers' emerging transfer interest in Mavididi this week.

Former Scottish Sun and The Herald reporter Mark Hendry has claimed that the Bears have held encouraging talks with Leicester over a deal for their star winger.

It's claimed that Gers may be prepared to stump up around £7million to secure the signature of the former Arsenal academy talent.

That's a considerable amount of funds to splash on one player, but it could be a gamble worth taking judging by the words of his former Leicester manager, Enzo Maresca.

Now preparing to enter his first season in charge of Man City as Pep Guardiola's successor, Maresca spoke highly of Mavididi in an October 2023 interview via the Leicester Mercury.

But, he did share why he thinks that despite his undisputed talent levels, there's a particular unwanted trait in his game that he warned may prevent him from reaching the next level.

“Stephy for me, he is still 50 per cent. I can see him much better," Maresca began.

“This is consistency. In the moment he becomes consistent – Southampton game, Southampton game, Southampton game, same level, same level, same level – he’ll become an important player, probably for a different level.

“At the moment, it is what it is. Game good, game less, one better, one less. That’s why for me he is still 50 per cent.

"In the moment he gets consistency, he becomes an unbelievable winger. He agrees. That’s why we have tried to work on that.”

Consistency: an element that certainly let Rangers down on numerous occasions last season, both from team and individual performances perspectives.

So, the big question then is, has Mavididi become a more consistent player since Maresca acknowledged this weakness in his game?

Mavididi has proven Maresca's point

Unfortunately, the answer to that question is no.

In this past 2025-26 season in the Championship with Leicester, Mavididi played 42 times, starting 34 of those and culminating over 2,600 minutes of league action.

Despite that, he only managed to score three goals and provide one assist, with his final goal coming on the last day of the season.

The gap between that strike and his previous one was 27 games, and the distance between his first and his second? One.

So, if he's going to cost in the region of £7m, Rangers would surely want a more proven and reliable producer in their forward line.

Mavididi does have the likes of Arsenal, Juventus and Montpellier on his CV respectively, and has also played 30 times in the Premier League for Leicester.

But the winger doesn't seem to have heeded Maresca's warning, and that would be an expensive transfer mistake to make should history repeat itself at Ibrox.
